SRMC therapy for inoperable cancer
The Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute (Deemed University) at Porur in suburban Chennai has always been finding new ways to
treat medical problems where none has been attempted earlier. In the latest case, a 68-year-old man with complaints of
abdominal discomfort and
indigestion was admitted under Prof. K S Vijayaraghavan, Department of Surgery and was diagnosed to have an isolated cancerous lesion in the
liver. Due to his associated
cardiac and
lung
problems, he was deemed an unfit candidate for surgery.
It was then decided by a team of doctors headed by Dr. Roy Santhosham, an interventional radiologist at
Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Hospital to perform
Radio frequency Ablation – a therapy that is gaining significant ground in the treatment of
cancer.
This is the first time the procedure was performed in Chennai and the patient was administered
Radio frequency Ablation of the tumor, a minimally invasive technique which permitted him to be fit for discharge the next day. This method of cancer therapy involved the insertion of the special needle and ultra sound or CT guidance directly into the tumor following which radio-frequency energy is delivered. This results in heat generation, which destroys the tumor. No extra radiation is involved. The procedure may be done under local anesthesia. Though most patients are kept overnight for observation, a few may be discharged on the same day itself.
This procedure is found to be highly effective in patients with inoperable primary and secondary liver, lung and
bone
tumors.
