Cheaper meter to test blood glucose
An extensive research involving over 400 diabetes patients and 400 doctors was done in India to develop the product, from concept to launch, over a period of two years. This is the first blood glucose monitor to be clinically tested in India. J&J Ltd is premiering this global product in the Indian market and will follow that with launches in Asia-Pacific, Latin America, Eastern Europe and Africa in 2004-05. Initiated by the leading diabetologists of the country including Dr. V Mohan, Dr. Shishir Kumar, Dr. S.K. Wangnoo and Dr. Shashank Joshi, OneTouch Horizon has been developed by LifeScan keeping in mind the requirements of the Indian diabetic population. The barriers towards using a Self Monitoring of Blood Glucose device in India have been overcome with OneTouch Horizon, having addressed the issues of affordability and easy operating facility, said Dr V Mohan, President and Director, Madras Diabetes Research Foundation and MV Diabetes Specialties Centre.
OneTouch Horizon has been researched and developed over a period of two years with clinical trials in Chennai, and two places in UK (Edinburgh, Birmingham), he said adding that "For a Diabetologist, OneTouch Horizon is a dream come true because it makes it easy to stay in the diabetes safe zone; Helps the doctor develop the appropriate diabetes treatment; and provides accurate results in under five seconds. Dr. Shishir Kumar. Chief Diabetologist, Bombay Hospital said, "OneTouch Horizon is a blood glucose monitor, by the Indians for the Indians. Every Indian with diabetes can now stay in control and stay out of the danger zone using Lifescan's OneTouch Horizon." According to Dr Shashank R Joshi, Consultant Endocrinologist, Lilavati Hospital, Editor, JAPI, "OneTouch Horizon is a unique Asian meter, made for Asians, by Asians, by US based Lifescan, J&J. It will be a blessing for all Indians with diabetes who can now have a treatment option via self monitoring." "We have shown through our studies that regular monitoring lowers blood glucose and improves lives of people with diabetes as well as reducing their vulnerability to serious life threatening complications like heart attack and strokes", he added. "Simply said, OneTouch Horizon is SSM - Sunder (Sleek), Sastha (Affordable), Majbooth (Sturdy), and is field tested for Indian environment", he said. With every fifth diabetic in the world being an Indian, self-monitoring of glucose becomes a very critical step for people with undiagnosed or untreated diabetes, Dr Mohan said. Studies conducted by Dr Joshi and his team have shown that correctly diagnosing diabetes is equivalent to diagnosing a heart attack. Diabetes has a Danger Zone. In the 'danger zone', serious cardiovascular complications happen. In fact, the blood glucose levels could be in the danger zone even if the person with diabetes feels fine. The blood glucose numbers tell if the person is achieving his treatment goals - or if he is in the diabetes danger zone. A recent study has concluded that intermittent laboratory blood glucose tests are no longer sufficient to effectively monitor long-term glucose control. Regular self-testing is one of the best ways to know if the person is achieving his treatment goals and therefore staying in the Safe Zone. Self-monitoring is critical to avoid the cardia vascular complications of diabetes. Also it is an essential part of diabetes treatment for all people with diabetes. OneTouch Horizon provides a simple, affordable monitoring device, which helps in identifying people at risk of heart disease. OneTouch Horizon lets you see what your blood glucose number is any time, anywhere. It is accurate and so much easier than going to the lab. What's more, OneTouch Horizon costs less than any meter available today. It uses just a tiny drop of blood. RR
