Treating Acne

A new study finds women can control their acne with an oral contraceptive, but don't have to be exposed to the high doses they've been exposed to in the past. Details of the study were presented at this week's annual meeting of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists in Chicago.

Researchers from the University of Illinois at Chicago treated acne patients with either the drug Estrostep or a placebo. Estrostep is a low-dose oral contraceptive. It controls acne by reducing the levels of androgens circulating in the body. It is well established that androgen secretion is the trigger for acne.

Patients were divided into two groups and given either the drug or the placebo for six weeks - then switched. They were evaluated for changes in their acne count as well as the overall rating of the acne, their own assessment of their acne, and acne-specific quality of life ratings.

Of the close to 600 study participants, 84 percent reported their acne improved when treated with Estrostep. In addition, they noted an improved quality of life during their treatment period.

Based on these findings, Melissa Gilliam, M.D., and colleagues from the University of Illinois at Chicago conclude that Estrostep is effective in the treatment of moderate acne and offers patients an alternative to high-dose contraceptives.
