Treating Acne
Researchers from the University of Illinois at Chicago treated acne patients with either the drug Estrostep or a placebo. Estrostep is a low-dose oral contraceptive. It controls acne by reducing the levels of androgens circulating in the body. It is well established that androgen secretion is the trigger for acne. Patients were divided into two groups and given either the drug or the placebo for six weeks - then switched. They were evaluated for changes in their acne count as well as the overall rating of the acne, their own assessment of their acne, and acne-specific quality of life ratings.
Based on these findings, Melissa Gilliam, M.D., and colleagues from the University of Illinois at Chicago conclude that Estrostep is effective in the treatment of moderate acne and offers patients an alternative to high-dose contraceptives.
