Drug helps infants undergoing heart surgery
Researchers from Children's Hospital of Philadelphia studied 350 infants over a five-year period. They tested the drug, allopurinol, in infants with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS). HLHS happens when an infant is born with a severely underdeveloped left ventricle in the heart that is unable to pump blood to the body. About half of the infants had HLHS and the other half had lower-risk heart defects. The infants were divided into two groups. One group received the drug and the other group received a placebo. Researchers found allopurinol protected HLHS infants from neurological and cardiac complications. They found no benefit from the drug in the infants that suffered from lower-risk heart defects. They also noted there were no adverse effects from the drug.

A new study shows a drug used to treat gout in adults also helps protect infants from complications after heart surgery. 
Researchers say before surgery for HLHS was introduced in the early 1980s, children with this heart condition survived only until early childhood. While the survival rates have improved over the past 20 years, many of these children suffer from complications after surgery. Researchers say their study shows allopurinol could be effective in preventing these side effects. They report infants on the drug suffered fewer seizures and cardiac events after the surgery.
