Reducing smoke exposure to young children
It is estimated 40 percent of children younger than 5 years live with a smoker. This kind of regular smoke exposure can be detrimental to their health. Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health recruited nearly 300 families with children younger than 3 years old who lived with a smoker. The families were randomly assigned to receive either motivational intervention or self-help information. The first group attended motivational interviewing sessions with a trained health educator and four follow up phone calls. The second group received a copy of a smoking cessation manual, passive smoke reduction tip sheets and a resource guide in the mail. Nicotine levels in the homes were measured during the six-month study. The study targeted a large sample of racially and ethnically diverse low-income families in which passive smoke exposure is a threat to the children. They believe their findings have important implications for health providers. They conclude motivational counselling is effective in reducing the amount of passive smoke exposure to young children who live with a smoker.
