Risk for Pregnant Women with Heart Disorder

Peripartum cardiomyopathy is a rare form of congestive heart failure that develops either in late pregnancy or in the first five months after delivery. It typically involves the left ventricle of the heart, which is enlarged and not pumping efficiently. Researchers from the University of Southern California School of Medicine in Los Angeles studied subsequent pregnancies in more than 40 women who had the disorder during their first pregnancy.

Of the 44 women studied, 28 had been diagnosed with the disorder during the first pregnancy but the left ventricular function had returned to normal afterward. Sixteen women who had the disorder during the first pregnancy suffered persistent left ventricular dysfunction.

In the first group, researchers found 21 percent had symptoms of heart failure with a subsequent pregnancy. In the second group, 44 percent of women experienced symptoms of heart failure with their subsequent pregnancies. Researchers report 19 percent of the women in the second group died after their subsequent pregnancy.

Researchers conclude, "Subsequent pregnancy in women with a history of peripartum cardiomyopathy is associated with a significant decrease in the left ventricular function and can result in clinical deterioration and even death."
