Pregnancy Complications for
Diabetics
There has been conflicting information in past studies on
the effects of pregnancy on retinopathy, a complication of diabetes. A new study finds
pregnancy may make this condition worse.
Two common complications of type 1 diabetes are
retinopathy and nephropathy. Retinopathy is an eye disorder, and nephropathy is
inflammation or breakdown of the kidney. While some studies have shown a worsening of
retinopathy, others have not. Results of the first large prospective study to assess this
problem are published in the recent issue of Diabetes.
Researchers studied 180 women who had 270 pregnancies and
500 women who did not become pregnant. The women all have type 1 diabetes. They followed
the women for almost seven years. Tests on their eyes were done every six months and
urinary tests were done annually.
Compared with non-pregnant women, results showed pregnant
women were at an increased risk worsening retinopathy during pregnancy. There was no
significant difference in the increase of nephropathy for pregnant women and non-pregnant
women. However, the long-term risk of retinopathy and nephropathy does not appear to be
increased by pregnancy.
Researchers conclude women with type 1 diabetes should be
followed closely by an experienced retina specialist during pregnancy. |
