Energy centres within us

The previous article gave an insight about the three channels (nadis) which form a major portion of our subtle system. This week, a brief introduction about our seven energy centres.

The chakras are energy centres which govern the subtle, psychosomatic aspects of our inner being. This Sanskrit term means 'wheel', and when the chakras are awakened, they turn in a clockwise direction.

They open up like flowers and pour out their qualities, thus re-establishing our inner balance and restoring our health and form.

The seven prime energy centres within us are:

1. Mooladhara
2. Swadhistana
3. Nabhi
4. Anahath
5. Vishuddhi
6. Agnya
7. Sahasrara

1. Mooladhara
‘Moola’ means root, and ‘adhara’ the support. This chakra brings support and protection to the roots at Mooladhara, to the Kundalini, and to the whole subtle system. It is at the base of the left channel. It controls the pelvic plexus and gives innocence and wisdom. Innocence is the quality by which we experience pure, childlike joy, without the limitations of prejudice or conditionings. Innocence gives us dignity, balance, and a tremendous sense of direction and purpose in life. It is nothing but simplicity, purity and joy.

2. Swadhistana
This centre gravitates around the Nabhi, providing support for its action and creating the area of the void. It symbolises the creative sense within us. When the Kundalini rises, it enters the Nabhi, goes down to the Swadhistan and up again to the Nabhi. The Swadhistan controls the aortic plexus. It is the chakra of creativity, pure attention and pure knowledge. It is the one which connects us to the inner source of inspiration, and enables us to experience the beauty around us. Also this is the centre of pure, steady attention and power of concentration. At the physical level, it looks after our liver, kidneys and the lower abdomen.

3. Nabhi
This centre is the seat of our attention, and it transmits material well-being and inner peace. It controls the solar plexus. This chakra is the one that gives us the sense of generosity, complete satisfaction and contentment. On the left side, the main quality of this centre is peace - clearing this chakra can relieve stress and tensions. On the right side, this centre looks after our liver which is the organ of our attention and power of concentration. When enlightened by the Kundalini, the Nabhi chakra gives us our spiritual ascent, righteousness and inner sense of morality, and complete balance at all levels in our life.

The void
Surrounding the second and the third chakra is the void, which stands for the principle of mastery (guru principle) within us. When the Kundalini is awakened and passes through the void, this principle of mastery is established within us.

Establishing this centre helps us get rid of all our habits, laziness, gross attachments, and everything that enslaves us one way or another: we become our own master.

4. Anahat
This chakra is situated behind the sternum, where antibodies are produced to protect our subtle system. This chakra gives a sense of security. It controls the heart plexus. This is the place where resides our spirit, our true self, which is eternally pure and unaffected by anything. On the physical level, this chakra looks after our heart and lungs - if affected, it can cause asthma or various heart conditions. All our worries, doubts and fears are destroyed when the heart chakra is fully enlightened by the Kundalini.

5. Vishuddhi
Situated in the neck and the throat, this centre is in charge of every aspect of communication between human beings. From a physical point of view, it controls the cervical plexus. It governs the five senses and enables us to achieve the witness state. It removes all our guilts and remorses when it is opened by the Kundalini, and gives us a kind and compassionate voice. The fifth chakra is the chakra of diplomacy, of pure relationships with others, and of playful detachment. The tendencies to dominate others or to feel dominated by others, the feelings of superiority or inferiority and all jealousies are removed when this chakra is nourished by the Kundalini.

6. Agnya
This is situated in the middle of the forehead, at the optic chiasma, where the channels of the subtle system cross. Agnya is the straight and narrow way leading to the kingdom of heaven, the state of thoughtless awareness. It is the centre of forgiveness. Forgiveness is the power to let go of anger, hatred and resentment and to discover, in humility, the nobility and generosity of the spirit. It is the one that dissolves all our ego, conditionings, habits, false ideas of racialism, and all our misidentifications.

7. Sahasrara
Situated in the limbic area (also the fontanelle bone area), it represents the integration of all the chakras and all the aspects of the divine within us. The Sahasrara is the destination, a holy place filled with the silence and the bliss of the spirit. This chakra gives us the direct, absolute perception of reality on our central nervous system. This is precisely what is achieved by self-realisation, through the spontaneous awakening of the Kundalini given by Sahaja Yoga.

When the Kundalini rises through each one of our seven energy centres, we get all of the divine qualities associated with each of our energy centres and that helps us to become a divine personality.
