The National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli (NITT), is preparing a comprehensive website on the famous Sri Meenakshi Amman Temple of Madurai, which would facilitate the temple find a place in the 'New Seven Wonders of the World'.
The voting for the 'New Seven Wonders of the World' is now going on around the world.
According to NITT director, Dr P Subramanian, three main parameters for choosing 'Wonders of the world' were the structure in question should be man-made, it should depict the architecture and design of a particular period and nationality and it should be a heritage site. The documentation regarding Sri Meenakshi temple was now going on.
He said in Tiruchi that the sanctum sanctorum of the Sri Meenakshi temple dates back to 1,600 BC. The different structures had been built over a period of 900 years.
NITT has won the prize for digitalising the antique maps and drawings of the famous Pamban bridge, near Mandapam, in Ramanathapuram district.
The NITT, under the World Bank aided programme through the Ministry of Human Resource Development, had spent Rs 17 crore out of Rs 22.4 crore allocated for the Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme.
