The Mahakumbabishekam of the 'Raja Sabai' (Ayiramkal Mandapam) of Natarajar Swamy Temple at Chidambaram was performed on April 30, 2007, after five days of yagasalai
poojas.
The entire renovation cost has been funded by Chennai-based devotees and philanthropists, M S Ramachandran and M R Sivakumar without any contribution or collection of funds from others. This kumbabishekam was performed after more than 30 years.
The painting on the ceiling and dome of Raja Sabai was damaged due to poor maintenance and inadequacy of funds.
The renovation committee took up extensive research and travelled to various temples in and around Thanjavur for inputs on painting and designs and history behind each frames of paintings. They then took up the task of restoring the old glory of 'Raja
Sabai'.
