In view of the aradhana of Sadguru Shrimath Santhananda Swamigal, the founder of the Chennai Om Sri Skandasramam temple, on June 1, there will be a special abhishekam for the guru at 10 a.m. followed by annadanam at 12.30 p.m. at the Chennai Om Sri
Skandasramam.
The swamigal belongs to the lineage of Avadhootha saints. He was a torch-bearer for Hinduism and its sanctity.
He is considered by many as their guiding spirit and an epitome of peace. There are many who think of him as an incarnation of Goddess Bhuvaneshwari whom he propitiated piously.
Besides Chennai Om Sri Skandasramam, the swamigal has built the Judge Swamigal Adhishtanam at
Pudukkottai, Om Sri Skandasramam at Salem and Dattagiri at
Sendamangalam.
There is a beautiful, 4 ft high, marble statue of the likeness of Santhananda Swamigal at the Chennai Om Sri Skandasramam temple.
P Santhanam, who was handpicked by the swamigal to play the role of ashram manager, gives an inkling as to what his ideas were. His conceptions of temples were always big. He wanted people to be in awe when they stood in front of the idols. The idols at Skandasramam, made of panchaloha and stone, are huge:
Punchamukha Heramba Ganapathy - 12 ft
Kamala Siddhi Vinayagar - 6 1/2 ft
Matha Sri Bhuvaneswari - 6 ft
Puncha Mukha Anjaneyar - 14 ft
Veera Sarabeshwarar - 12 ft
Saniswarar - 14 ft
Swaminatha Swamy - 12 ft
Dhattatreyar - 15 ft
Ugraprathyankira - 12 ft
Sri Chakra Mahameru - 5 1/2 ft
Swamy Iyyapan - 7 ft
Ashtadasabuja Durga Parameshwari - 6 ft
"Alleviating the sufferings of humanity has been his primary concern. He has advocated the greatness of japa and homa as a means to achieve peace and prosperity." So, the temple regularly performs
homams.
Not only that, they insist on feeding anyone who steps into their doorway. This was what pleased the swamigal most and his devotees, who run the show, continue the trend at the temple.
"I request all devotees to participate in the aradhana festival and get the bountiful blessings of Sadguru Shrimath Santhananda Swamigal," says a note from
Santhanam.
