Uthiramerur is a well-planned town and has a
hoary past.
The famous temple of Sundaravaradar has three
tiers and the Nava Narayanar are consecrated in a separate sanctum
sanctorum.
In the lowest tier, Lord Sundaravaradar faces
east, Achuta Varadar faces south, Anirudha Varadar faces west and
Kalyana Varadar faces north.
There are separate steps leading to the shrines
of the gods.
There are beautiful sculptures decorating the
walls of the temple.
Vaikunta Varadar, in a sitting posture, faces
east.
There are separate shrines dedicated to Krishna
and Arjuna, Narasimha and Bhuvarahar. The icon of Bhuvarahar is
unique as he carries his consort as a mother would carry her child.
At the top most tier, Mahavishnu as Ananthasayana
Perumal reclines on the serpent bed, blessing Markendaya who stands
obediently near him. Brahma appears on the lotus from his nabhi and
at his feet Madhu Kaitapar and Shiva are also present as part of the
divine congregation.
It is believed that during the exile Pandavas
were blessed by the gods who appeared before them.
It is believed that unmarried girls and boys
would get married if they worshipped Kalyana Varadar consecutively
for five Wednesdays.
Childless couple will be blessed with progeny
worshipping Krishna on his birth star Rohini.
Uthiramerur is situated 85 km from near Chennai
and the temple is near the bus stand.
