Her first song number 'Masthana Masthana…' was a sizzling catchy number picturised on actress Roja and this was under her father's baton. She hasn't sung much since then. Bhavatharani, daughter of maestro Illayaraja has just won her first National award for the best playback singer. The film is 'Bharathi' and her father scored the music.
Read on for the interview:
Q: Your feelings when you heard that you have won the award…
Bhava: I wasn't expecting it. So I was surprised and excited. Doubly so, because it was my first award, and I had got it singing for my father's tunes.
Q: How did your father and brothers react to the award?
Bhava: My father at first didn't believe it! Then he blessed me. My brothers laughed and teased me. All were happy.
Q: On your father's influence?
Bhava: He encouraged me to practice. As a child I learnt from T. V. Gopalakrishnan. Now I'm learning from Dakshinamurthy. My training continues as usual.
Q: Ever felt overawed or overshadowed by your father's name?
Bhava: Yes, definitely. He's been a trendsetter and has achieved so much. My two brothers Kartik & Yuvan, and me have a long way to go.
Q: With four musicians under one roof, it must be quite noisy at home?
Bhava: It is. Practicing is always done in the house. For composing the tunes, my brothers go to some quiet or remote place like the Ideal Beach.
Q: What kind of music do you like?
Bhava: Carnatic, Classical, Hindustani. I like Jazz too.
Q: Your preference - is it singing or composing?
Bhave: Singing. If composing comes my way I'll take it up.
Q: How was it composing music for Revathi's first directorial venture?
Bhava: It's the first film for which I'm composing music. I feel privileged to be a part of this experimentation of an all-women crew. It was delightful working with Revathi, a sensitive, concerned person.
Q: Are you working on a music album?
Bhava: Yes, for Thamizhselvan, for whom I did a song for his 'Vandematharam'. The album is titled 'I am in love'. I've composed the tunes and have roped in my two brothers to sing. Also singing are actor Vikram who has a solo and a duet; Vijay Yesudas, son of Yesudas; Shruti Kamal Hassan (Kamal-Sarika's daughter); Murugan (a drummer and brother of singer Anuradha Sriram). The album is shaping up well.
