'Direction does not mean extravagance' - Muthuraj

Through the Malayalam film 'Guru', art director Muthuraj has gained everyone's attention. He happens to be the assistant of noted art director Sabu Siril. At present he is working on a Tamil film, 'Piriyamaanavalae'. He shared his views about the present trends in art direction, graphics and other interesting experiences

You must have had several interesting experiences in this field. Can you share a few with us ?

A: As soon as I finished my art course from the Chennai College of Arts, I joined as assistant to the famous art director Sabu Siril and worked in a number of Malayalam films. The first film that I did independently was the 'Butterfly'. But since the director did not go along with my views I quit that film half way through. Later I worked in the film 'Yuvadurki' which won deserved accolades. Now I am working in the film 'Guru', directed by Rajeev Anjal. He was the director of 'Butterfly' too but this time he has let me work in my own way and style.

What made you put up such extravagant settings for 'Guru'?

A: As soon as I heard the story of 'Guru' I brought to my mind the world of imagination I had created about the Indus Valley Civilization and the lifestyle of the people. So I adopted a style, which is a blend of both the Western and Indian styles.

In the film 'Guru' music and art direction look inseparable. Tell us about that.

A: Yes the story has been framed in a way that gives great prominence for music and art direction. Ilaiyaraja has composed wonderful, lilting music and he also took immense interest and saw the sets, which he usually doesn't do.

Despite the extraordinary art direction, this film failed to make a strong impact on the people. What are the reasons?

A: Actually speaking, none of them understood the basic concept of the film. This is 'Guru', which emphasises that there is only one God. Moreover this film, which was produced by nearly 50 persons, was not taken with a profit motive. When it was sent to Delhi for award selection, the judge panel did not even see this film.

What were the expenses for art direction for 'Guru'?

A: The total expenses were just Rs.24 lakh and for a scene involving a miniature of a hill the expenditure was just Rs.350. There is nothing called extravagant, it all depends on creativity.

In old films strategic scenes were shot successfully without the use of computers and graphics. What do you have to say about this?

A: I myself learnt about computers just to get some idea about it. I am fully confident that I can create some special scenes and bring out special effects without the use of computers.

What do you have to say about the current trend in creating sets in the Tamil film industry?

A: To be very frank, the trend is absolutely absurd. They raise huge extravagant sets for an unnecessary situation. Just to show the extravaganza they are wasting money.

What are the other language films in which graphics are used?

A: The Telugu industry makes use of graphics.

As an art director which are the films that have given you utmost satisfaction?

A: The television serial 'Bible', director Jayaraj's film 'Millimneium Stars' gave me utmost satisfaction. Director Jayaraj respected my work and listened to my views.

Is art direction always synonymous with extravagance?

A: No, not at all.

How many films have been released with you as art director?

A: About eight films have been released. Actually I have quit some five films in the middle.

Why?

A: See some directors engage an art director just to please the union and the director himself will take care of the art direction. And no separate budget is set aside for art direction. Only if creativity and the need for art direction are understood, the standards will go up in this regard.
