An interview with Director Pavithran

"I am proceeding in the right path" - Director Pavithran

Director Pavithran, whose film "Suriyan" was much talked about, has not had any hits since. After a long gap, he is directing the film "Pugazh" with Sarath Kumar in the lead role. He is confident the film will be a success. Excerpts from an interview with him:

Your film "Suriyan" was a great hit. But there has been a long gap since then. Can you tell us the reason for this?

A: I produced the film "Selva" in which Vijay played the lead role. It was directed by Venkatesh Selva. It was a big budget film, for which usually trade is done after the film was made. Since I felt it would be helpful for the production, I had finished the business transactions well before the film was finished. But production costs continued rising. So I incurred a loss of nearly Rs.1.5 crores. This delayed the production of my next film "Mookkuthi Kaasi".

Tell us about the film "Pugazh"

A: Sarathkumar and I have been discussing the film "Pugazh" for the past one-year. Sarathkumar is assisting me by offering suggestions with regard to scenes, dialogue and various other aspects. So I am confident of giving another big hit along with Sarathkumar.

It was rumoured that you had some misunderstanding with Sarathkumar?

A: See, when a director becomes a producer, a lot of problems arise. And moreover we do not have an international market like Hindi films do. Since I have to depend on somebody else for my financial requirements, the director in me is pushed to the background and I have to make some compromises. So, I am forced to lose some control.

What do you feel is the reason for the failure of your film "I love India"?

A: All of us had put our heart and soul into the film "I love India". The censor board cut nearly 14 scenes from the film. And moreover the Hindi domination in the film made our audience feel uncomfortable. These, I feel, might be the reasons for the failure.

You are a person known for carrying out your responsibilities as a director to the full. In that case why did you direct unsavoury films like "Kaadhal Palli" and "Kalluri Vaasal"?

A: While making the film "Kaadal Palli", my only intention was to give the producer some profit. But finally I could satisfy nobody, both the producer and my fans. Now I am confident that I am going in the right path. I am sure I will deliver what my fans want in the best possible way and satisfy them through "Pugazh".
