The Matrix Reloaded
Director: Andy and Larry Wachowski
Cast: Keanu Reaves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie Ann Moss, Hugo Weaving.
No doubt there's more money and more complex special effects this time, but Matrix reloaded is no patch on the first version, The Matrix. The 1999 film had taken one's breath away, by its sheer novelty and magnitude of the canvas, and exciting visual effects. The style, a combination of characters that seemed to be from some mythology, the stunt and fight scenes choreographed the Hong Kong-cinema style, all packaged in a slick Western way, took the viewer's breath away. But this time the novelty is missing, the digital environment a bit overdone, and even tedious to watch at times.
The startling concept of the first version that the real world is only a computer-generated one, programmed by machines to distract humans, and that Neo (Keanu Reeves) is the Chosen One to save the humans from artificial-intelligence bandage, ends with Neo being anointed by Morpheus (Fishburne), and loved by Trinity (Moss).
This time the trio return to liberate the hidden city of Zion, where all the already-freed humans lived. The oracle had prophesied that the machines would attack the city, and Neo to liberate it, must follow her directions.
The sequences following this time include - a 14-minute car chase on a six-lane freeway (built at a cost $2.5 million); a chase scene where Trinity rides a bike at high speed; Neo's battle with hundreds of clones of the sun-glassed Agent Smith, Neo's bete noire of the earlier part; and Trinity dying and Neo bringing her back to life. While in the earlier version it was Neo who stole the show, here it's Fishburne who's the more endearing one. The movie ends rather abruptly. For there's the last of the trilogy to appear sometime in November-The Matrix Revolutions!
