Tomb Raider, The Cradle of Life
Director: Jan De Bont
Cast: Angelina Jolie, Chris Barrie, Gerard Butler, Ciaram Hinds, Djimon
Hounsow.
The first version had the curvaceous Lara Croft racing against time and succeeding in getting her hands on a powerful relic that had power over life and death. This time Croft is back to retrieve the mythological 'Pandora's Box' which if in the wrong hands could be used as a powerful weapon to unleash terror in the world.
But Croft is not alone in her search. There is also the evil and ambitious Dr. Reiss (Hinds) who wants to get his hands on the box and hold the world to ransom. There is Chen Lo, the kingpin of the Chinese crime syndicate who has ganged up with Reiss and has upstaged Croft in edging closer to the box. Finally, there is Terry (Butler) Croft's old beau, who'd turned mercenary and was convicted for treason. Croft gets Terry out of prison, with the promise of a new life, and the duo embark on their mission.
B ased on a popular video game, the film has been shot in exotic locales in the lush forests of Kenya and Tanzania, in China, Hongkong, and in England and Wales. There are lines addressed to Croft like, "Do you ever do things the easy way?". And Croft's final reckoning when she says, "Some things are never meant to be found!". With a lot of action and special effects, the film has 116 minutes of running time, and it is fascinating to watch Angelina Jolie in all her style and action.
