Welcome to the Jungle
Director:
Peter Berg
Cast: Dwayne Johnson (aka The Rock), Seann William Scott, Rosaric Dawson, Christopher
Walken.
It’s a completely unpretentious action flick, never for a minute trying to impress one with the storyline or performance. Totally action-oriented, with some humour thrown in, this fast-paced film is a showcase for the brawny Dwayne Johnson also called ‘The Rock’. One would remember him from films such as ‘The Scorpion King’ and ‘The Mummy Returns’.
Professional wrestling champion Dwayne plays Beck, a retriever, who would stop at nothing to get back whatever he’s paid to bring back. Beck, fed up with his acts, now wants to cal it quits and start his own restaurant. His boss consents but only he has to do one last job before he can walk out.
He has to get the boss’ son, Travis (Scott), back home to his father, somewhere from Brazil. But Travis is a tricky guy to handle, and Beck has to go through various adventures before he can get him home. Travis, for one, knows the way to the Gato Diablo, a rare artefact, for which men are willing to do anything, even kill. There’s Marina (Dawson), a local, who holds the answers to the jungle’s hidden mysteries, and is determined that the Gato will not be taken out, but remain with her people. There is Hatcher (Walken) who wants it for himself, and is out to turn the jungle and the locals into a money-making proposition.
Beck and Travis, after the initial mistrust of each other, share a bonding after they go through their various adventures. Hilarious is the scene in the jungle where the duo get caught in a trap, is hauled up by a rope and hung upside down, with a lot of menacingly screeching monkeys for company. A film to pass time!
