Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon

"Give me my comb!" these simple words uttered by Jen spell, defining aggression and esoteric spirit carries the movie through. Chow Yun Fat, as Li Mu Bai, is all poise and grace in a role as a zen warrior who relinquishes his past to hold the hands of his longtime sweetheart. For someone who has perfected the art of Wudan, Li Mu Bai is ruled by his heart, and his realization ultimately comes at the moment when he confesses his love to Yu Shen Lien, played by the versatile Michelle Yeoh.

The story is set in the exotic and wild China, based on the novel by Wang Du Lu. The crux of the story revolves around "The Green Destiny" the legendary sword, that never knows defeat. Li Mu Bai hands over the sword to Yu Shen to be delivered in Beijing. The drama begins when the Governor comes to know of the sword in a casual chat. That very night a young tackle, lays hands on the sword and steals it outside right under the nose of the guards. Yu Shen manages to catch the culprit in the nick of time and in the ensuing duel, between the sword thief and Yu Shen a visual delight a "la ballet of martial arts" is seen. Just when Yu Shen has the thief pinned down, another mysterious warrior (Jade Fox) appears and takes away the thief and the sword to safety.

With the sword missing it is panic time in Beijing and Li Mu Bai is summoned to restore the Green Destiny to its place. The needle of suspicion points to the young Jen, daughter of the Governor. Under the guise of aristocracy, lays the deep passion for adventure and Jen (Zhang Zi Li) who lives the role, is nothing but "the bold and beautiful" packed together. Jen relatively bored by inaction and the dour lifestyle in the palace, finds herself in the midst of a desert fling wherein she falls in love with a bandit named Lo. On the verge of getting married to another man in aristocracy, her thoughts retreat to the romantic interludes with Lo, a paradox she is unable to overcome. Adept in martial arts and almost a perfect Wudan herself, Jen's troubled spirit finds an amicable match in Lo. To think that their affair started with the words, "Give me my comb!" may bring a coy smile to the sturdy Jen. Lo's appearance is brief and distinct, but when Jen leaves him to be a free spirit in the end, it stumps him. Ang Lee's movie stands out for the amazing duels at unimaginable portals, and coupled with grace and poise makes it a perfect watch for any connoisseur of movies.

A peek into the past and one is likely to be reminded of a similar movie, "36th Chamber of Shaolin" which made its appearance two decades ago. The duel sequences are very well made with a touch of class and mastery, that leaves the viewer awe struck. Background scores to the fights are perfect, lifting the audience with them. Li Mu Bai and Jen live their roles, while Yu Shen lends colour with her quiet yet powerful presence. Director Ang Lee gives it all, packing the right things one after another, making it a piece of compelling viewing. Chow Yun Fat's presence is magical and he spells thorough revenge and outrage in his fights with Jade Fox. Michelle Yeoh, Zhang Zi Li and Chow Yun Fat make a triumphant trio, by just doing it. And for the young Zhang Zi Li, she is just about the audience pet, dishing out sizzling stunts mixed with a pleasing countenance as a warrior. With the Green Destiny in her hand she is a completely transformed soul, and signifies the troubled spirit that is out to conquer the world.

'Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon' adds to the list of martial art films that have made a successful appearance in India, and will surely rank as the best among them for quite sometime. The brain behind the daredevil and rather poetic fight sequences is Yuen Wo Ping, who deserves all the appreciation for making it a day for the avid movie watcher.
