Spider Man and others

To give you an update, I have seen some very interesting movies. Including the one released today, the much awaited "Spider Man". It's definitely a terrific film, beating all the movies of its genre hands down (Batman, Superman, etc.). And me being a heck of a comic book fan all these years (having literally grown up on them), I can vouch for the authenticity. Tobey Maguire as the vulnerable reporter and Spiderman performs admirably as does Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane. Willem Defoe as the Green Goblin is convincing. Technically the movie is superb, the screenplay is very good and the movie is very very absorbing.

E.T.'s 20th anniversary edition brought just as much joy, fun, romance (with the cosmos) and a lump to the throat that it did 20 years ago. A timeless classic.

Another interesting movie was "Life or Something Like It", starring the irrepressible Angelina Jolie in a role that should have been alien to her, given as she is, to action roles. But she shoots in the dark and finds the target. She carries the film on her slender shoulders very well.

"Changing Lanes", starring Samuel Jackson and Ben Afleck, is a class act, proving once again that when it comes to psychodramas, Hollywood is way ahead of other film industries. Samuel Johnson, like Morgan Freeman, Denzel Washington and Will Smith has been responsible for the recognition of black actors.

Hollywood also scores once more with the classic "Ice Age" For all its ballyhoo, Bollywood cannot come near Hollywood when it comes to producing movies that suit all ages and touch the hearts too. This is brilliant stuff, a movie that should be bought and seen over and over and shown to your children time and again.

Monsoon Wedding, by Mira Nair has been running to pretty full houses. I was pleasantly surprised to see the involvement of the audience at Maple III theatres. It was literally like sitting in a movie hall in India. The 'oohs' and the 'aahs' were not just audible, they were passionate as well. Notch one more for Mira Nair.

The rise of Milla Jovovich as an action-oriented heroine, on par with Angelina Jolie is complete in Resident Evil. Milla is also extremely beautiful, with those luminous green eyes literally lighting the screen.

Murder by Numbers starring Sandra Bullock is a pretty slick attempt to portray how crimes are solved in the high-tech world of today, simultaneously exploring the rather frightening truth that teenagers who are bored in life are apt to try out stuff that can be very very dangerous.

Panic Room is good because it has Jodie Foster and Forrest Whitaker, two actors who simply cannot act badly.

Watch out for these in the months to come:

The Minority Report (Tom Cruise) - by Steven Spielberg, the most awaited movie of 2002
Unfaithful (Richard Gere)
Signs (Mel Gibson) - by M. Night Shyamalan
Insomnia (Al Pacino, Robin Williams)
The Secrets of Ya Ya Sisterhood (Sandra Bullock)

Don't Watch or Watch with a pinch of salt

Clockstoppers - rather facetious
Vanilla Sky - Tom Cruise should only try to be Tom Cruise
Orange County - A ghastly blunder
The Sweetest Thing - great if you want to watch just Cameron Diaz's ear-to-ear smile
Collateral Damage - Another run-in-the mill that tries to capitalize on an ageing Arnold Schwarzneger

Older stuff

Among the older movies that I have been catching up, the best that I have seen so far has been "Meet Joe Black", starring the startlingly handsome Brad Pitt, the dignified Anthony Hopkins and the beautiful Claire Forlani. A classic for all times..
