Story:

Claire Kubik (Ashley Judd) and her husband Tom (Jim Caviezel) are leading a happily married when suddenly Tom is accosted in public by the FBI and arrested. It takes Claire a while to find that Tom was arrested on the charge of murdering civilians in El Savlador fifteen years in a covert military operation. Tom swears his innocence and insists that he is being set up to cover a much larger operation that turned into a disaster. Claire, a high-flying attorney till then, decides to fight it out, even quitting her job. She enlists the support of Charlie Grimes (Morgan Freeman), an ex-marines lawyer since she does not understand the military games and rules, specially in the military courts. Grimes is fighting alcoholism but was a hell-raising lawyer in his heyday. He is a self-proclaimed "wild-card" and finally helps Claire in nailing down the so-called web of lies of the military and helps free her husband.

In a final twist, however, Tom turns out to be the real killer and when Claire discovers the truth, he tries to kill her. Of course, Claire escapes but Tom dies. Claire then joins Grimes as a partner.

Review:

Once again, this is a case of a movie rescued from total obscurity by the commanding presence of two very fine actors, Ashley Judd and Morgan Freeman. Carl Franklin has tried to emulate the success of "A Few Good Men" without the same powerful script and the brilliant presence of Jack Nicolson wonderfully supported by Demi Moore and Tom Cruise.

Ashley Judd proves her mettle once again as Claire. She brings her refreshing grace and charm to a role that provided little scope for powerful histrionics. Morgan Freeman provides the other powerful prop that make this movie stand. The chemistry between the two is obvious and they make a great team. Some of the scenes are very well acted out and it requires no great reviewer to tell you that we are watching two of the greatest actors of our times.

Caviezel as the husband is a good choice as is Bruce Davison as the General who appears to be at the center of a cover-up conspiracy. Amanda Peet is wasted as the kid sister of Judd. Peet has lots of talent and is yet to find a role that will skyrocket her career.

The direction of Franklin is passable. He seems to lose focus many times, but manages to generate some high-voltage action. The background score by Revell is pretty good. The locations are very good actually, specially the hilly south San Francisco.

The script is awful and does not do any justice to a potentially powerful story.

Final Score: Two out of Four Stars
