Resident Evil

Cast:

Cast: Milla Jovovich (Alice), Michelle Rodriguez (Rain), Eric Mabius (Matt), Martin Crewes (Kaplan), James Purefoy (Spence) Colin Salmon (One)

Director: Paul Anderson

Screenplay: Paul Anderson

Visual Effects Supervisor: Richard Yuricich

Based Upon: A popular videogame series in which a huge mansion is infested with strange zombies and monsters. A special team called S.T.A.R.S. is looking into reported murders in the forests outside Raccoon City. They find in the process, a deserted research institute haunted by horrible zombies and other hideous monsters. Can they stop the evil from spreading out into the world, or even just get out alive?

Story: The movie is about a military unit that battles an out of control super computer. It is at the heart of Umbrella Corp., a mega-scientific conglomerate that indulges in illegal viral and genetic research. Somewhere things go wrong (don't they always?) and a deadly virus creates hundreds of mutants, flesh-eating undead. Alice (Milla Jovovich) and her military unit have to thwart this futuristic corporation that exists within a secret complex guarded by a nasty, malevolent computer (Red Queen). The complex is full of steel-and-glass subterranean catacombs. There are horrible obstacles at every turn, but Milla and her team manage to get out alive and provide the backdrop of a sequel. That’s it for the story folks.

Review: Yet another prequel. This time to a videogame. The last successful movie based on a videogame was "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider", starring the superbly fit and sultry Angelina Jolie. "Resident Evil" is a movie made around Milla Jovovich. The sexy girl with the haunting blue eyes and a deadly figure makes a successful transition from supermodelling into movies. Is the screenwriter of this movie a fan of "Alice in Wonderland"? The heroine is called Alice and the super computer "Red Queen". Milla (Alice) looks absolutely sensational in the short, red outfit she wears. She has also delivered. The scenes in which she combats the dogs are pretty realistic, to say the least. Her other big scenes are a bit gross, but pretty effective. Like the one where she snaps a zombie's neck between her thighs and a vigorous fight against a mutated monster's tongue (yuck!!!). The script also conveniently has her showing off a wet, clingy look as the heat is turned on (action wise, that is).

Milla looks pretty assertive most of the time and her saucy dialogue is slick. She fits the bill totally and carries the movie on her shoulders.

Michelle Rodriguez (Rain) is battling her inflection and also fights off the mutants, the "undead'' people who want to eat her. She manages to make herself visible once in a while. The special effects are great. The one that stands out is the encounter between the rescue unit and the slice-and-chop laser defense mechanism. Some of the scenes are pretty gore and downright silly sometimes, like the ones in which hundreds of zombies are crowding the frame. People die with stunning regularity and in macabre fashions (graphically). Companies selling tomato and barbecue sauce must have made a pile from this movie. Well, well, this is a movie based on a videogame.

The men in the movie? Oh, easily forgettable. With Milla around, and Michelle in tow, they hardly exist. Definitely an enjoyable movie, certainly more enjoyable than "Tomb Raider". Milla is emotionally alive, though Angelina Jolie did try to infuse some life into Lara Croft. Don't look for literary or intellectual pretensions. Just sit back and relax.

Final score: Two out of four stars
