Deewanapan

Director: Ashu Trikha
Producer: Vashu Bhagnani
Cast: Arjun Rampal, Diya Marza, Om Puri and Vinod Khanna.

Diya Marza is Kiran, the daughter of the rich Ranvir Chaudhary, a man who is respected by one and all in the village they live in. Kiran falls in love with one of the village men whose name is Suraj (Arjun Rampal). This is when the turmoil starts, as the father refuses to accept Suraj as his ‘damat’ because of their difference in stature. Arjun realizes how difficult it can be to love someone when there is such a difference; but he continues to love her. Then disaster strikes as the two most important men in Kiran’s life are now against each other - with her stuck in between her affection for her father and her love for Suraj. Suraj’s father; a respected government official (Om Puri) decides to take matters into his own hands by trying to bring his son and Kiran together, as he believes in only love and the truth.

An oft-repeated story - a rich girl and a middle class boy falling in love and the affluent father creating a quandary - has been witnessed innumerable times since the inception of Hindi cinema. The storyline is wafer-thin and the initial reels don't help in enriching the theme.  The focal point in the first half is on romance, music and light scenes and the narrative moves on the trodden path. But the graph of the film modifies when Vinod Khanna makes a dramatic entry in the lives of the lovers. The sequences, thereafter, although predictable, are well executed and keep the viewers' interests alive.

Arjun Rampal carries the film on his broad shoulders and comes up with a sincere performance that is consistent throughout. Diya Mirza shows vast improvement over her earlier performance. Om Puri is, like always, highly competent. Smita Jaykar is good. On the whole, the film is an entertaining love story that should appeal mainly to the youth. Directed by Ashu Trikha, this movie promises the audience a glimpse of what the younger generation is like today.
