Company

Director: Ramgopal Varma
Cast: Ajay Devgan, Mohanlal, Vivek Oberoi, Manisha Koirala, Antara Mali.

Director Ramgopal Varma takes off from where he left in ‘Sathya’. While the earlier film had a more superficial look at the underworld, centering mainly on one man’s interaction with it ‘Company’ goes deeper into the theme. Reportedly inspired by real life characters, the director projects the interplay of egos between an underworld don and his protégé, and also depicts the underworld’s links with the police, film industry and the politicians.

In a casting coup of sorts, the director has brought in Ajay Devgan to share frames with  Malayalam Super Star Mohanlal. And there is the sensational new find Vivek Oberoi, son of talented actor Suresh Oberoi. If Devgan is cool as Malik Bhai, the dreaded don, Mohanlal’s is a quiet dignified performance as the cop out to apprehend the duo. Manisha Koirala fits in well into the role of Devagan’s mistress, while Antara Mali (daughter of photographer Jagdish Mali) gets enough chances to prove her talent.

Chandu a petty thief (Oberoi) joins Malik’s gang and soon becomes his trusted aide and hit man. Envy and rivalry of those in the lower cadre who couldn’t stomach Chandu’s fast rise, and misunderstandings between Malik and Chandu, lead to their parting of ways. Following their trail is cop Krishnan, the end resulting in a mix of blood and gore.

Editing is slick and the camera takes a look at the proceedings from interesting angles. This hardcore action film, with almost no respite, may have its lagging moments. But then the film with its unconventional treatment, interesting characters, and fine performances is definitely a film worth watching.
