Another album on Thiruvasagam
'Manickavasagar Aruliya Thiruvasagam Potri', a devotional album on Manickavasagar's Thiruvasagam, was released reently in Chennai by leading violinist Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan. The album has music composed by Abhayambika while the songs are rendered by music-critic-turned-composer and singer, Simham Kumar.
Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan said Abhayambika, who was one of the foremost disciples of Natyakala Kesari Vazhuvoor Ramiah Pillai, received excellent training in the roots of Bharatanatyam as well as Carnatic music in her formative years. That is why she is regarded highly as an authority in music today. It is common nowledge that many persons in the music field sought her opinion on certain technical aspects of music. It is but natural that her product, Thiruvasagam, was one of the finest.
Abhayambika had
trained Simham Kumar well in the nuances of music, including in
the manner of rendition of these songs, especially in the 'bhaavam'
(feeling) that should form part of the songs. he said.
Vaidyanathan recalled that he had to put in a lot of work to
compose music for albums and films. "It is not easy to
compose music for films," he pointed out, wishing a bright
career for Simham Kumar, who too was composing music for films.
Singer Manickavinayagam, who received the first copy, said he had heard a lot about Abhayambika as one of the best disciples of his father, Vazhuvoor Ramiah Pillai. She had taken a lot of pains to get ready this album. The hard work was evident in the manner in which the songs were composed and the way Simham Kumar had rendered the songs, he added.
