Mridangam player's Guinness record
Noted mridangam player Kuzhalmannam Ramakrishnan has won a mention in the
Guinness Book of World Records for his 36-hour marathon performance in
Palakkad in July.
Guinness World Records, London, has sent him the certificate saying that he is the 'keeper of a record' for his non-stop performance at Palakkad on July 24 and 25, Ramakrishnan said.
"This is a great recognition. More than the personal recognition,
mridangam, which is an important instrument in south Indian classical music, has won a mention in the Guinness," Ramakrishnan said.
The artiste said he had set out for the record-making performance at a time when he was in great personal pain, following the death of his sister. "This was a sort of a musical tribute to her. She was a great fan of classical music," he added.
He said he was also grateful to art forum 'Swaralaya' for arranging the event.
Son of mridangam maestro Gopalakrishna Iyer, Ramakrishnan has been playing the instrument for over 25 years. Vocalists whom he has accompanied in concerts include
K J Yesudas, V Dakshinamurthy,
T V Sankaranarayanan and
T N Seshagopalan.
Ramakrishnan is also a painter and lyricist.
