Carnatic

MS an institution in herself: Sonia

Congress president Sonia Gandhi condoled the death of eminent Carnatic musician M S Subbulakshmi saying, "Subbulakshmi was more than an individual endowed with unparalleled musical gifts". "She was an institution in herself who enriched and ennobled millions across the world by her accomplishments. This is a sad moment and my sympathies go out to her family. Subbulakshmi belonged to the entire country and indeed to all humanity," she added.

Paying tributes to Subbulakshmi, Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee said her passing away marks the end of an era in Carnatic music but the melodious voice will remain forever. She was a musician par excellence whose demise is an immense loss to the world of music, he said. Information and Broadcasting Minister S Jaipal Reddy in his message said Subbulakshmi's death marks the end of a "tireless journey of a humble and humane musician par excellence". The nation has lost a "silent messiah of peace, unity and amity", he said.

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit described Subbulakshmi as "treasure for India" and said in her passing away modern India has lost its "devotional voice". Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhar Reddy said her contribution in Carnatic music would always be remembered.
