The Sri Thyagaraja Sangeetha
Vidyalayam,, celebrated its silver jubilee and the golden jubilee of the musical career of its founder-principal, sangeetha vidwan G N Desikan, on August 13 and 14 at Sri Subramanya Temple, Saidapet, Chennai, on a grand scale.
On August 13, the vidyalayam’s silver jubilee - there was a music arangetram of the vidyalayam’s students and granddaughters of Desikan – Nadadhur Sisters - G N Lavanya & G N Aishwarya - accompanied by vidwans Trivellore V Parthasarathy on the violin and Nagai S Soundararajan on the
mridangam.
Several vidyalayam students also sang in the silver jubilee celebrations chaired by Sangeetha Kalanidhi Dr B Rajam Iyer and sangeetha vidwan V R Sethurama Iyer, disciple of Madurai Mani Iyer and guru of G N
Desikan.
On August 14, Thyagaraja Day, the students/musicians rendered Sri Thyagaraja’s kritis. This was followed by Pancharatnam goshti ganam, led by Dr T K Govinda Rao and K R
Saranathan.

After a warm reception to G N Desikan on his completing 50 years of musical service, 2,000 programmes and completing 75 years of age, he gave a concert with vidwans Madurai Balasubramaniam, Madurai T Srinivasan and Thanigai
Nagarathinam.
This was followed by Ganakaladhara Madurai Sri Mani Iyer day - A vocal recital by T K Govida Rao accompanied by vidwan Kailasam, Tiruvidaimaruthur S Radhakrishnan and V V T
Srinivasan.
Then 25 musicians and the vidyalayam’s colleagues were honoured with shawls / pramana patram / mometo for services rendered to the vidyalayam since its inception in 1980.
The chief guest was V Ramamurthy IAS
(Retd.).
The function ended with Sri Anjaneya Utsavam – Bhajan Padathi by vidwan K R
Saranathan.
A 22-members committee was formed to celebrate the Sri G N Desikan Trijubilee Celebration –2005, and based on their advice, it was celebrated in a grand manner.
