Jalatarangam concert in Paris
Our cultural ambassador made waves with water in a country as far away as France. Quite natural, you would think, since he plays the jalatarangam. Anayampatti Ganesan gave a scintillating performance at Cite de la Musique, Paris, France, recently.
Ganesan was accompanied on the violin by his son Anayampatti Venkatasubramanian, Trichy Murali on the ghatam, Subramanyam on the mridangam and Sundar Nagarajan on the
morsing.
He started with an invocation song on Lord Ganesha ‘Vatapi Ganapathim’ by Muthuswamy Dikshitar is Hamsadhwani. A fast-paced song ‘Raghuvamsa Sudha’ in Kadhana Kudhugalam made the audience go into raptures. The following piece was the familiar ‘Sudhamyi’ by Harikesanallur Muthiah Bhagavathar in Armirthavarshini. If this raga is handled properly it is believed that Varuna will bless mankind by showering his grace. The music buffs sat in rapt attention, enjoying the music.
The piece de resistance was ‘Vidavu Seiyave’ in Karaharapriya by
Tyagaraja.
Ganesan had a judicious mix of songs. Catering to a foreign audience is different because one has to showcase our rich, priceless treasure adroitly. Ganesan created an impressive musical collage and audience asked for ‘en core’ twice.
Venkatasubramanian on the violin played exquisite phrases and Subramanyam Sabesa Iyer on the mridangam ably supported the concert. Percussionist Trichy Murali mesmerised the audience with a splendid thani avarthanam on the ghatam. He transformed the clay pot into a ocean of music. Sundar Nagarajan on the morsing adequately responded to the exchanges.
