Guru pooja of Dakshinamurti Pillai
The Guru Priya Laya Vidyalaya of Trichy, headed by Kalaimamani Trichy Thayumanavan, a renowned mridangist, celebrated the 70th guru pooja of Pudukottai Sri Dakshinamurti Pillai, a mridanga-kanjira player.
Trichy, a vibrant temple town, reverberated with the sapthaswaras on June 2. Belonging to the musical lineage of Dakshinamurti Pillai, Thayumanavan is the disciple of Dakshinamurti Achariar, direct disciple of Dakshinamurti Pillai, also called Chinmayananda Mouna
Swamigal.
Vidwans and vidhushis flocked to Subramanya Swamy temple in the morning where a special pooja to the Lord was performed. Since divinity and music are inseparable, the function started with a special abishekam to the Lord.
The musical soiree was surcharged with bhakti with the continuous rendering of songs by musicians. Since it is customary to award a couple of musicians every year, two eminent vidwans were given cash award this year also: Embar Raghava Simhan and Arutpa Isai Kondal Mayavaram
Ramaswamy.
Several musicians participated in the function, the notable among them being Karaikudi M S Mani, Ambujam Vedantam, Bharati Mahadevan, child prodigy Kashyap Mahesh, violinist Tiruvellore Parthasarathy, Kudantai Balasundaram, Trichy Rangarajan, Hari Kumar, Valagaiman Tyagarajan and a galaxy of musicians from
Chennai.
The students of Guru Priya Laya Vidyalaya played a pivotal role in making this function a grand success. Annaprasadam was served to everyone.
(My special thanks to Trichy Murali for providing information about the function.)
