The South Indian Cultural Association, Indore, promotes music by conducting music festival ever year at Indore. This year’s festival featured Sankari Krishnan – vocal, Shivakumar – veena and Vaikkom Jayachandran – vocal, to name a few.
Shivakumar’s curtain raiser was a Varnam in Sriraga followed by an evergreen classic of Tyagaraja, Ragunayaka in Hamsadhwani. Shivakumar created a divine aura by playing the celestial instrument.
In his rendition of Nadhadhunumanisam he brought out the dignity and grace of the raga in full measure. The fast and racy portrayal of Manavyalalkim in Nalinakanthi was pristine and pure.
Shivakumar’s raga alapana of Ranjani had tradition and innovation. Durmagacha and the subsequent swara passages was caressing and soothing.
The piece de resistance was Karaharapriya and the song was undoubtedly Chakkaniraja. The raga alapana, kalpana swaras were a mélange of melody.
Shivakumar was accompanied by A S Ranganathan on the mridangam and Trichy Murali on the ghatam. Ranganathan imparted deft touches and delicate shades. Murali’s rhythmic patterns were dynamic and dramatic. Their tani struck a musical chord.
Association members Srinivasan, Narayanan, S B S Iyer and Kalyan Iyer conducted the festival in a grand manner. The programme was coordinated by Trichy
Murali.
