Versatile personality Revathy Sankkaran was conferred the title of ‘Sakala Kala Valli’ and was presented the lifetime achievement award for her contribution to Tamil through Eyal, Isai, Natakam. The title and award were presented by ‘The Mylapore Trio’ – S Surendranath, S Amarnath and S Aparna - who run the Sri Sumukhi Rajasekharan Memorial Foundation.
According to a note from the organisers, the presentation was made during the Balar Chithirai Kalai Vizha, an exclusive five-day festival for children and youth (from April 27 to May 1, 2007) “to promote Tamil culture”.
Revathy Sankkaran anchored ‘Kaaviya Ganam’, sung by the Sumukhi foundation children and presented “popular devotional film songs of yesteryear”.
She also presented ‘Kadhambam’, a mixture of various ideas, thoughts and tips for women and children.
Revathy Sankkaran talked about “acham, madam, naanam and payirpu”, comparing the past and the present family situations and status of women and changing culture. She appreciated the Trio for its gratitude towards its foster parents and grandmother in whose memory the foundation functions and in whose memory the awards are given away.
About 500 children from Chennai, Hosur, Salem, Kancheepuram, Nagapattinam, Karaikkal and Pondicherry took part in this festival “ in traditional attire”.
Children between the age groups 4 and 20 year participated in 25 different events including Bharatanatyam, folk dance, Carnatic music, folk music, painting, craft, kolam, etc.
Special events were Azhagum Arivum (South Indian Beauty Pageant), Vidukathaiyum Pazhamozhiyum (Proverbs & Riddles) and Miss Mylapore and Master Mylapore (B Priyadarsana, and V Karthik were crowned Mylai Bala Kumari and Mylai Bala
Kumaran).
Other titles conferred that day were: V Divya - Chithirakarapuli (arts), Anjali Rajan ‘Palkalai Vithaki’ (crafts). An exhibition of their art and craft works were displayed.
The Sri Sumukhi Rajasekharan Memorial Rolling Trophy, instituted for the first time, was awarded to guru Uma Murali of Shri Muralidhara Guruji
