Torch-bearers
of the great Lalgudi music parampara, the brother, sister duo -
Lalgudi Krishnan and Vijayalakshmi - drenched the audience at
Music Academy with their thematic presentation 'Parjanya' or
Rain Clouds.
It was the concluding day of the three-day
lecture and concert series organised by DakshinaChitra.
Krishnan's preamble on the different facets
of Parjanya kickstarted the memorable concert. A Varnam in Bowli
set the tone for the musical soiree. The Varman captured the
early morning ambiance.
We had a glimpse of vasantham - spring - when they played
Tyagaraja's composition Seethamma Mayamma in the same raga,
Vasantha.
Their raga delineation of Amirthavarshini was a diadem of the
recital. Rendering Amirtavarshini is believed to please the god
of rains, Varuna. Needless to say, the song was
Anandaamirthavarshini by Muthuswamy Dikshitar. The duo showcased
the timeless beauty of nature in pristine form. The seamless
flow of music whetted one's appetite. The breezy swaras were
Spartan and elegant.
Vijayalakshmi had especially composed a song for the occasion in
the ragas Ravichandrika, Veenavadhini and Behag. Their vinyasa
of the ragas made us swim in the ocean of music for a long time.
The music reached a crescendo when they made us visualise the
different dimensions of rain.
The talented offspring of violin maestro Lalgudi Jayaraman
played a tillana in Pahadi, which is their father's composition.
Their erudite presentation of tillana made us go on a boat
cruise enjoying the gentle breeze and mild drizzle.
Patri Satish Kumar on the mridangam meshed well with Trichy
murali on the ghatam. Their tani, depicting thunder and
lightning, was a feast to the ears. They virtually thundered
during the tani. It rained music followed by thunderous applause
at the academy.
