The monthly 'Sundaram Finance Sunday Kutcheri
in the Park', which was started as a launch pad for young kids
in Chennai, has gone international. Arul Priya Manickavasakan
(13) a student of Delhi Private School, Dubai, will present a
vocal music performance at the mikeless, open-air, 'Sunday
Kutcheri in the Park' at the Nageswara Rao Park in Mylapore this
Sunday August 5, 2007, for an hour between 6.30 a.m and 7.30
a.m.
Arul Priya has been learning Carnatic music
for the last nine years. She will be accompanied by G
Krithivasan on the mridangam and by Priyamvadaa on the violin.
Kalavathy, mother of Arul Priya, says, "Sundaram Finance is
doing a great service to the community by promoting young
musical talent and providing opportunities to kids under 15
years. Immediately after coming to know about the 'Kutcheri in
the Park' from our friends here in Chennai earlier this year, we
were determined to participate in this prestigious and very
different kind of a Kutcheri."
"We were going to be here only for a month in Chennai and we
approached Sundaram Finance several months in advance from Dubai
and registered ourselves for the audition."
Durga Venkatesh, guru of Arul Priya, said, "I have been
teaching young kids for several decades now, but I have never
heard of the concept of a 'mikeless kutcheri' and that too in an
open air environment. This is a unique concept and I believe
this will be a different kind of experience for my student.
Without the mike, Arul Priya will have to put in more effort and
I think her voice is likely to come out better. I am sure she
will gain a lot of confidence and benefit from this experience."

Commenting on the progress of the Kutcheri in the Park, T T Srinivasaraghavan, managing director, Sundaram Finance Ltd,
said, "Our idea, when we started the monthly Sunday Kutcheri in
the Park, in February 2006, was to provide a launch pad for
budding artistes in Chennai, under 15 years, to showcase their
musical talent. In order to encourage them to perform without
inhibition, we chose an open air environment without mikes and
speakers."
"Today, the programme has grown in popularity, judging by the
enquiries we receive every month, from children not just from
Chennai and around, but now from overseas as well, to perform at
the Sunday Kutcheri. Equally gratifying is the growing response
from the community and the large number of music connoisseurs,
who gather at the park to encourage and applaud the young
artistes."
