Carnatic
vocalist Charulatha Mani explores ragas and their striking
features in classical as well as film music in her ‘Isai Payanam’
concerts, and eight such houseful concerts have taken place from
March 2007 onwards.
The Isai Payanam concerts are recorded live and released by Giri
Trading Agency Pvt Ltd as DVDs, VCDs and audio CDs owing to
their wide appeal and ingenious presentation.
Live DVDs of Isai Payanam volumes 5, 6 and 7 were released at a
function held at R K Swamy Auditorium, Mylapore, on December 11.
The chief guests for the evening were Dr V V Srivatsa, renowned
musicologist, and Ragini Gupta, Consul for Cultural Affairs, US
Consulate.
The live DVDs, VCDs, and audio CDs were
released by Srivatsa, and Ragini Gupta received them.
Meenakshi Balu, managing director, Giri
Trading Agency Pvt Ltd, was present on the occasion.
Srivatsa commended the artiste on her deep
analytical approach to the ragas and her ability to keep the
rasikas glued to their seats for over two hours with her
mesmerising voice and presentation.
Ragini Gupta said Charulatha was doing great
service to music by tracing the journey of ragas from the
classical world to the film world, thus making the younger
generation aware of their roots and tradition.
Volume #5 contains ragas Nalinakanthi, Suddha
Dhanyasi and Simhendramadhyamam
Volume #6 contains ragas Sri Ranjani, Hamir
Kalyani and Charukesi
Volume #7 contains ragas Amritavarshini and
Sindhubhairavi.
The function was followed by Charulatha
Mani’s Isai Payanam concert where she dealt with ragas
Subhapantuvarali, Madhyamavati, Brindavanasaranga and Brindavani.
