Jazz and the French connection
A workshop will be held by jazz pianist Madhav Chari on Saturday, November 11, at 5 p.m. at the Top Storey, Alliance Francaise of Madras.
All are welcome this workshop for general lovers of music as well as musicians who want to know more about jazz music. No prior music background is required.
Musicians and actors who work with improvisation are especially encouraged to attend.
The workshop will explore the nature of jazz improvisation using a familiar tune/melody that everyone will recognise. This will be followed by a brief overview of the French
connections to jazz music: starting from the birth of jazz music in New Orleans to the support/encouragement of black American musicians in Paris, to the current jazz
scene in Paris and France's contributions to jazz music.
This will be followed by a further exploration of "bebop" and contemporary jazz music.
The workshop will conclude with a question and answer session with the audience.
This workshop is a prelude and an introduction to 'Parisian Thoroughfares', a jazz concert by the Madhav Chari Trio comprising Madhav Chari (piano), Fabien Marcoz (bass)
and Mourad Benhammou (drums) to be held on November 16 at the Museum Theatre. Passes for the show will be available at the workshop.
The AFM is located at No. 24 (old no. 40) College Road, Nungambakkam, Chennai 600 006 (ph: + 9144 28279803/28271477)
