The eighth Idea Jalsa series came as a treat to music lovers in Chennai. The Indian Music Academy presented Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia in Chennai at the Kamarajar
Arangam on December 28, 2006, as part of its efforts to spread and popularise Indian music in India and across the globe, said its spokesperson Durga Jasraj, daughter of
Pandit Jasraj.
Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia enthralled the audience. The programme was preceded by the performance of veena player Jayanti Kumaresh at the eighth 'Idea Jalsa Series'.
The 12-city concerts are free, said Durga Jasraj, so that everyone can be a part of the mesmerising music assembly. The prgrammes were followed by an interactive music
session addressed by the performing artistes. "This was undertaken to help the general public interact with the artistes for the first time and to understand music and the
musician much better. It will help the music students of the city and also help awareness
of music in general," she added.
The Indian Music Academy (IMA) aims at the preservation and promotion of young talent in the field of Indian music and provide a platform to showcase their skills. "The
purpose of this academy is to motivate and inspire the younger generation to take up Indian music as a profession and take pride in carrying on the Indian culture and
traditional music. The objective is also to spread and popularise Indian music around the globe."
The academy is a brainchild of Durga Jasraj and Vikram Shankar and is initiated by the 'Art & Artistes' organisation, which, for the last seven years, has dedicated itself to
the restoration and welfare of the music industry. The founder patrons of the academy are Pandit Jasraj, Pandit Shivkumar Sharma and Javed Akhtar.
