Interviews

Rahman on Global Tour

The music wizard A R Rahman will set off on another Global Music Tour from August this year.

Rahman disclosed this in an interview to chennaionline.

The plans for the tour were being finalised. There were invitations from several countries and his associates were working out the tour itinerary in consultation with organisations abroad including event management groups.

On his international assignments, Rahman said, "I have just concluded work on the music score for Lord of the Rings. That was a challenging assignment since the movie was so rich in visuals and graphics that our score had to be match that effort. That is a tough ask. I think we have done reasonably well."

Having concluded his international commitment, the good news is that Rahman will devote some time at last to his donestic commitments, the Indian film industry. What is particularly music to our ears is that Rahman has agreed to score the music for at least 5 Tamil films.

In response to our question on the dwindling number of assignments for Tamil films, Rahman, with an impish grin said, "I knew this question is coming, However, I can give you the good news that I am working on at least four Tamil films; I think the number will go up to 5 shortly."

Rahman said he is already working on Mangal Pandey. Among the Tamil films that he will be associated with are Best Friend (for S J Surya), AC and Godfather. A film for Maniratnam is also on the cards.

It is natural that Rahman's enthusiasm for films has its ups and downs. "I am not really keen on doing the routine stuff. That would be boring. I need to do different things. One has to do take some risks and experiement a bit. Therefore, I try to do work in films where the work will be challenging and something different."

"That is also one of the reasons why I'm constantly looking for different voices all the time. I don't want all the songs to sound the same. There will be a certain monotony with the same singers singing the same way. There must be something new, in the song, in the voices too. I look for fresh voices, who will give a different feel to each song."

Rahman added that sometimes he would change the tune in accordance with the freshness of the voice. "I would sometimes alter the tune based on the range and freshness of the voice. Sometimes, I have an open mind and I ask a singer to hum whatever they like and I will develop the tune from there."

Clearly, Rahman wants to innovate all the time. That is why, he is always at least a step ahead of his contemporaries.
