Meaning:
O Hari! Where will I look for you?
When you did not heed even the prayers of the four-headed Brahma (where will I look for you).
I have been posturing as one of your foremost devotees while I have been of evil mind, thought and often foul-mouthed. O object of Tyagaraja's worship (where will I look for you).
Notes:
The kriti is said to be set variously in rAgAs karnATak bEhAg and harikAmbOji. On the context of the kriti, scholars such as Kirtanacharya C R Srinivasa Iyengar aver that it was composed when Tyagaraja was desparately searching for the idol that he worshipped everyday, which was flung into the river Cauvery by his brother. Dr V Ragahavan, however, states that the kriti is rich in philosophy and that there is nothing in it that places it in the context of a particular incident in the saint's life.
It is also not clear as to when Vishnu did not heed the prayers of Brahma.
