The Vaithis of Carnatic Music

Maha Vaidyanatha AyyarVol IX of the Music Academy Journal, 1938, contains the following:

In an interesting article in the Silpa Sri, Vol I, No 10, Vasishta Bharatiyar gives short accounts of 25 personalities in the world of Carnatic music who bore the same name: Vaidyanatha.

1. 'Kudirai' Vaidyanatha Ayyar, who was patronised by Saraboji; was honoured with a horse; it is he who began the Ghanam style of singing. His son was Ghanam Ganapati Ayyar, who defeated Bobbili Kesavayya; his son was Todi Sitarama Ayyar otherwise known as double-Pallavi Sitarama Ayyar. Ghanam Ganapati Ayyar was the brother-in-law and teacher of Ghanam Krishna Ayyar of Tirukkundram.

2. 'Munjoru' Vaidyanatha Ayyar, a contemporary of Todi Sitarama Ayyar, was patronised by Sivaji. He was the father of Patnam Subrahmanya Ayyar.

3. 'Peria' Vaidyanatha Ayyar was born in Radhamangala and was patronised by the zamindar of Sivanganga, Kattammanachiyar.

4. 'Chinna' Vaidyanatha Ayyar: 'Peria' Vaidyanatha Ayyar aunt's son.

5. 'Vaiyaccheri' Vaidyanatha Ayyar was the guru of Todi Sitarama Ayyar. It is this musician who was otherwise known as 'Anai' Vaidyanatha Ayyar and 'Anai' Ayyar. Hence, his Tamil songs are known as 'Anai Ayya' songs.

6. 'Maha' Vaidyanatha Ayyar.

7. 'Vinai' Vaidyanatha Ayyar of Mayavaram.

8. 'Nattu' Vaidyanatha Pillai, of Karuttattangudi, near Tanjore.

9. 'Karuppu' Vaidyanatha Ayyar was the father of Trivadi Subrahmanya Ayyar.

10. 'SItti' Vaidyanatha Ayyar of Ratnakottai Taluq; expert whistler.

11. Maratturai Vaidyanatha Ayyar also known as Konerirajapuram Vaidyanatha Ayyar.

Karnata Vaithi, Kurungur Vaithi, Tirunelveli Vaithi, Madurai Vaithi and Chidambaram Vaithi were nagaswara vidwans.

We can now add several modern Vaithis to the above list.

1. Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavatar: The article was written before he became famous, we presume.

Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavatar2. Tiruvarur Vaithi - Mrudangam artiste who has been a long time accompanist for Sudha Ragunathan. He is currently employed by the Singapore Indian Fine Arts Society as a mrudangam teacher. His uncle Tiruvarur Nagarajan was a mrudangist. His grandfather Tiruvarur Kunju Iyer was also a mrudangist and was the guru of Tiruvarur Bhaktavatsalam. Vaithi is a disciple of Karaikudi Mani besides his grandfather and uncle.

3. J Vaithi - Son of the vidwan D K Jayaraman. He is a mrudangist who has learnt from Tanjavur Ramadass and T K Moorthy.

4. Trivandrum Vaithi - Employed in AIR Trivandrum, this Vaithi is a disciple of Mavelikara Velu Kutti Nair and Palghat Raghu.

That's all I can think of for now. More suggestions are welcome to be added to the official Sangeetham 'Vaithi' database that we will be building up soon!!
