 Vidwan V Subrahmaniam is one of the most faithful exponents of the Semmangudi school of music. Having had the singular good fortune to accompany his Guru for over four decades, in a majority of his concerts, Subrahmaniam is today a repository of the ocean of music that is
Semmangudi.
It is therefore but appropriate that his CD on ragas is titled Sangeeta Saagara. The set, comprising of two CDs contains 30 ragas. The ragas selected are all of the "rakti" variety, which represent the essence of classical Carnatic music. The structure of the raga, the Janaka Janya relationship, the gamaka nuances pertaining to each raga, the nyasa svaras, special prayogas that transcend the limited terrain of the arohana avarohana format, allied ragas and compositions in the raga are all explained.
While the bulk of audio is done by Subrahmaniam himself, with just a Tanpura for the drone, he has also used samples of recordings of Semmangudi,
K V Narayanaswami and D K Jayaraman where appropriate. The entire project has been guided till completion by Semmangudi himself. All audio is in MP3 format.
