The Madras Book Club will be taking up the recently released biography of M S Subbulakshmi for discussion on March 23.
The biography has been written by veteran journalist and advisor of 'The New Indian Express', T J S George, and published by Harper Collins. It is almost the first serious attempt at a biography of a Carnatic music personality in English. There have, of course, been any number of biographies in vernacular languages. 'Sruti', the magazine on classical music and dance, has, for the past 18 years, been carrying biographical accounts of the lives of Carnatic musicians and one may look on George's work as a natural culmination of what was started by 'Sruti'.
The book looks at the personality of Carnatic music's mega star and that of her husband, the late T Sadasivam. It objectively analyses the circumstances under which women came to the forefront as performers. It also traces the route that MS took to reach the pinnacle.
The Madras Book Club will be taking up the book for discussion at Hotel Connemara, Binny Road, Chennai, at 6.30 p.m.
The panel of speakers include K V Ramanathan, editor of 'Sruti', Ashokamitran, veteran writer, and Sriram.V, editor, Sangeetham.com
All are welcome to attend the programme that will last an hour.
