Sangeetha Bhaskara Sidharth K
Totadri’s vocal concert, under the auspices of the VDS Arts Academy,
Nungambakkam, on July 16 was totally a tradition-oriented performance. Naturally
so, for he is the disciple of Vaigal Gnanaskandan, an uncompromising stickler
for sampradaya-bound Carnatic music.
Beginning with the ‘Viriboni’
(Bhairavi-Ata taaalam) Varnam, Sidharth showed his definite class in all the
other seven renditions among which he excelled in delineating the varied
patterns of the Khamboji-Adi:Tyagaraja composition ‘O Rangasayee' very
impressively.
The Thanjavur Quartet’s ‘Kaar
Viriyum Solai’ (Ragamalika: kanda chapu), Dikshitar’s Angaarakam Aasrayaami
(Surutti-Rupakam), Gopalakrishna Bharathi’s ‘Idadhu Paadam Thookki’
(Kamas-Adi), Koteesvara Iyer’s ‘Velayudha’ in Dharmavathi, Tyagaraja’s
‘Ganapathinim’ (Saurashtram) and ‘Lemi Telpa’ (Navaneetham: not often
heard in city venues) were other significant renditions that reassured the
rasikas present that Sidharth, if he sustains a high level of sadhaka and
devoted commitment to this vocal art, would hit the headlines very soon.
He has that much potential,
promise, self-assurance and dignified poise. However, he should learn to be less
grim and more pleasant. He looks too serious for comfort. This second year ‘JIPMER’
(Pondicherry) medical student is also a brilliant student having stood
school-first in Vidya Mandir in his plus-2 examination in 2003 (Best Outgoing
Student Award). He also won the M S Sekhar prize for most musically endowed
student in Vidya Mandir and the prestigious R S Mani Prize for the best vocalist
in the school. Need any more references?
