Musical heritage
India, also known as Bharatam, is a country personified by the domination of arts, culture, religion and philosophy. We can assume that 'Bharata' is denoted by the initial letters of Bhava, Raga and Tala.
Bhava represents emotion
Raga, the passion and
Tala, the rhythmic cycle.
All of them together contribute to the masala of classical music like onion, ginger and garlic add flavour to Indian cooking.
So, the raga flavour, combined with bhava and tala, adds beauty to the graceful form of Indian music.
The form of Indian music is Sangitha, that is Gita, Vadhya, Nritta, denoted by the vocal, instrumental and dance categories.
Gita, Vadhya and Nritta are characterised by bhava, raga and tala.
Vocal music is dominated by sound - Nada Brahmam. Combined with the lovely words which encapsulate the rich heritage of Indian music, it is represented by Tumburu Narada, who ever sings with the
tambura.
Instrumental music is represented by Goddess Saraswati with the veena and God Nandikeswara representing the percussion music with the mridangam or damarukam in his hands.
The ultimate concept of nada is Lord Sankara, who is personified as
nadaswarupa.
