Piracy killing music industry
The music industry in the country has lost 50 per cent of its share between 1999 and 2004 mainly due to piracy.
This was informed by Information and Broadcasting Minister P R Dasmunsi in a written reply in the Lok
Sabha.
He said several steps had been taken by the government to reduce piracy.
According to information received from the Indian Music Industry (IMI), the size of the music industry has fallen from Rs 1,000 crore in 1999 to Rs 500 crore in 2004.
In another written reply, Dasmunsi said the government held meetings with broadcasters, cable operators, consumer organisations and other stakeholders with regard to the implementation of the Conditional Access System
(CAS).
"There was a broad consensus that a nine-month time is required to take preparatory steps and to implement CAS smoothly and as such no exact
time frame can be indicated," he said.
He also informed the House that Doordarshan's revenue rose from Rs 530.23 crore in 2003-04 to Rs 946.96 crore in 2005-06 while that of All India Radio had increased from Rs 141.04 crore to Rs 268.83 crore in the same period. (Agencies)
