K
J Yesudas was at his enteraining best during his concert on January
3, 2008, for the Parthasarathy Swami Sabha. Rasikas were full of
appreciation for the artiste. And, Yesudas reciprocated the warmth
by singing some numbers of listeners' choice at the tail-end of the
concert.
The concert was remarkable for the way the senior
artiste showed energy and enthusiasm until the conclusion of the
over three-hour concert.
'Sri Vinayakam Manasa Smarami' in raga
Trilochanapriya (a combination of Hamsadwani and Veenavadini) made
quite an impact on the rasikas. After a viruttam, he sang the
Uthukadu Kavi composition 'Enna Punniyam' (Reetigaula) with quite a
dedication.
'Pariyachakama' (Vanaspati) and 'Chetulara
Sringaramu Jesi' of Tyagaraja got a fine treatment from the artiste.
Dikshitar's 'Sriramam Ravi Kulabdi Somam' (Narayana Gaula) is an
inspiring composition. Yesudas' presentation of this kriti was
outstanding for the way he lavished the sahityam with his impacting
voice.
The fast-tempo 'Telisi Rama' (Poornachandrika)
injected a sense of briskness among the rasikas and prepared them
for a musical evening. Annamacharya's 'Parusamu Sokaku Pasidauna
Paramathmude' (Kedaram) gave a fine listening experience for the
audience.
Yesudas often explores kritis and ragas that have
not been popularised. An elaborate alapana in Pantuvarali saw him
bring the beauty of the raga to the fore with his striking voice.
His singing of 'Raghuvara Nannu' and neraval at 'Manasunna Nike
Marulakonnanu' had a civilising impact on the rasikas.
The thani session at the end of the kriti
enlivened the evening show with percussion artistes matching each
other in innovation. Mridangist B Hari Kumar raised the bar with
some delectable strokes.
Vaikkom Gopalakrishnan on the ghatam proved an
equal match.
Violinist B U Ganesh Prasad gave a neat and
controlled presentation with his bow.
The
concert also saw Yesudas sing some popular numbers. Many a rasika
awaited eagerly for this part of the concert. Yesudas presented them
with quite an enthusiasm and devotion. And, they were delivered in a
reachable way.
'Kuzal Uthum Guruvayoor Kannane' (Maduvati), 'Rajeeva
Netraya' (Natabhairavi), 'Engirundu' (Todi without Panchama), a
Malayalam song 'Enthe Kannan Itra Karuppu Niram' (Desh) and 'Hari
Muraliravam' (Sindhu Bhairavi) were among the pupular numbers he
sang that evening.
'Ambarame' (Sahana) from Thiruppavai and 'Harivarasanam'
(Madhyamavathy) on Swamy Ayappan drew appreciation from the
audience. Finally, the more than three-hour concert came to an end
with a few slokas from Narayaneeyam 'Yogindranam' and 'Ayush Arogya
Sowkyam'.
