Sruti 20 celebrations
The 20th birthday of Sruti was celebrated at the Gnanananda Hall, Narada Gana Sabha on October 11, 2003. The programme began at 6.00 PM sharp, with a song of prayer (vAraNa mukha) by vocalist Geetha Raja. This was followed by a welcome address by KV Ramanathan, Editor in Chief of Sruti. Speaking in chaste Tamizh, Sri Ramanathan spoke of the void left behind by Sri N Pattabhiraman in the life of the magazine. He also spoke on the necessity for young blood to be infused into the team.
This was followed by speeches by Smt Sujata Vijayaraghavan, noted scholar, singer and musicologist, Ms Anita Ratnam, danseuse, Dr N Ramanathan, Professor, Dept of Music, Madras University, and Sriram.V, Editor, Sangeetham.com. All of them spoke on what Sruti meant to them and analysed its contribution to the development of classical music and dance.
A member of the Board of Trustees, Sri M Subramaniam spoke on the steps being taken to ensure the continued existence of the magazine and the rejuvenation of the late Pattabhiraman’s dream project, SAMUDRI. He also presented mementos of the members of the SRUTI
parivar.
The Vellore Gopalachariar Award, instituted in the memory of his father by vidwan Vellore G Ramabhadran, was then conferred on veteran vocalist SV Parthasarathy. The award comprises a medal, a shawl, a cheque and a citation.
Sri S Rajam and Vellore Sri Ramabhadran felicitated the awardee. Ms S Janaki, Deputy Editor Sruti, proposed a vote of thanks. This was followed by a music programme presented by the students of Smt Sulochana Pattabhiraman.
