Meaning:
O object of worship for Rishis! Did you not know earlier? Don't you have any compassion for me?
(Did you not know earlier) that I had no good qualifications (to earn your compassion)? You had fun in watching me wander hither and
tither!
In earlier days observing my conduct did you not shower your compassion on me? O crest of the solar race! Tyagaraja's idol! That my mind is like this only these days (did you not know earlier?).
Notes:
A song that depicts the desperation of Tyagaraja in seeking the Lord's grace, it is not without humour. Tyagaraja questions the Lord's ability to know everything. If He did, he ought to have known that Tyagaraja's mind would become unworthy of grace at some time. Yet He chose to shower His compassion on the bard at an earlier instance when his conduct was praiseworthy. He also took heartless delight in watching the bard wander all over the place seeking the Lord's grace, when the Lord knew all along that Tyagaraja was not worthy of it.
