S.V. Parthasarathy

We present below a profile of the Vellore Gopalachariar Gold Medal Award recipient for this year. The profile has been put together by SRUTI- Editor.

S.V. Parthasarathy was born in 1917. His father S.V. Vijayaraghavachariar was famous in the world of Tamil writing and could be said to have been its first genuine humourist. Parthasarathy learnt music first from his mother and after passing the SSLC examinations in 1934, joined the Sangeeta Bhushanam course in the Music College of the Annamalai University. He studied music there under vidwans T.S. Sabhesa Iyer, K. Ponniah Pillai, Tiger Varadachariar and Sathur Krishna Iyengar, and he was awarded the Sangeeta Bhushanam title in 1938. His concert career began in 1939. He is also a good veena player. He has been a regular on All India Radio, he was graded top ranking in classical music and as a composer.

He worked as a lecturer in music in the Annamalai University for two years from 1954. He then moved to AIR-Tiruchi where he was Assistant Producer of Light Music from 1956 to 1966 and Producer Carnatic and Light Music from 1966 to 1978. He produced a number of operas, skits and musical features for AIR. He set a number of songs to music for the light music programme and artistes like TM Soundararajan, P.B. Srinivos, P. Susheela and the Soolamangalam Sisters have sung under his direction.

In 1985, he was appointed Professor of Music in the Music College of the Annamalai University and became the Head of the Department and Dean of Fine Arts in 1988, a position he held till his retirement in 1990. He was a member of the Board of Studies in Music in the Madurai Kamaraj and Bharatidasan Universities. He is a member of the Experts Committee of the Music Academy. A writer on music and a musicologist, he has cut a number of gramophone records. Thirty songs on Jesus Christ set to music by him have been released as a cassette titled `Aatmavin Ragangal'.

Among his titles are Sangeeta Samrat from the Shanmata Ashramam and Nadakkanal from the institution Nadakkan. He has trained and continues to train a number of students in vocal music and the veena.
