Singing for Semmangudi

A moving programme to commemorate Semmangudi R Srinivasa Iyer was held recently in the city. The programme was organised jointly by the Sri Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer Golden Jubilee Trust, the PSN Disciples Forum and Sri Krishna Sweets at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan on November 12.
Speakers included K S Mahadevan, 'Hamsadhwani' T R Ramachandran, T K Govinda Rao and Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman. Each of them spoke about what the times he shared with Semmangudi, and anecdotes of Semmangudi's pungent wit elicited great laughter among the audience.
A musical homage was then paid by four students of Semmangudi and their sishyas in turn. First to sing were P S Narayanaswamy and his students, followed by V Subrahmanyan and his students. Then came Meera Kedaranathan (she and her husband K R Kedaranathan had learnt from Semmangudi) and her students, followed by Seeta Rajan and her students.
This was followed by group singing in which everyone present there participated. The singers were accompanied by R K Shriramkumar on the violin and J Vaidyanathan on the mridangam. Kripa Subrahmanyan compered the programme.
